2018 Theme: Conservation
“We want both the factory chimney and the noble trees. But the pity of it is that the noble tree is gone — that we have destroyed so much that might have been saved. To the older ones of us there is only the memory of a magnificence gone forever, for it cannot be replaced.” T.C. STEELE (from “The Art of Seeing Beautifully”)
New this year: No Entry Fee! 3 New Prizes!
Registration must be received by October 21st, 2018.
The first three prizes will be cash, and will be awarded during the Member Art Show reception and Annual Meeting.
Selma Steele’s Garden Award, cash prize of $100, given to one artwork in any medium that best represents Selma Steele’s formal garden at T.C. Steele State Historic Site. To be considered for the award, the artwork’s subject must be the formal garden at the historic site (in any season), and the artwork must be created no earlier than January 1, 2017.
Brown County Art Colony Award, cash prize of $50, given to one artwork of any medium depicting T.C. Steele State Historic Site, or any place (landscape or interior scene) within Brown County, Indiana. To be considered for the award, the artist should be sure the title of the artwork informs us of the subject’s location, (ex. The Trail of Silences in the Snow, or Spring Blossoms Parade in Nashville, or Salt Creek Elegy. Landscapes with locations that are not immediately obvious as qualifying, without the benefit of the title, may not be considered for this award.)
Friends of T.C. Steele Award, cash prize of $50, given at the discretion of the judge for one artwork the judge considers to be exceptional. Any medium or subject matter will be considered for this prize.
The People’s Choice Award, a gift certificate to the Friends Museum Shop, will be given to the artwork that receives the most votes by Nov. 29th, the last day of show display this year. At the end of the month, site staff will tally the votes and announce the winner and send the winner the prize via mail.
Art drop-off days for the member show are October 30th and 31st.
The opening reception for the Friends annual art show, the Friends Annual Meeting, and a celebration of the new Traveling Studio Wagon, will be held on Sunday, November 4th, from 2-4pm in Steele’s Large Studio! Refreshments will be served! Marty Krause will sign his new work on Gustave Baumann, Of a County Called Brown. Guests of the Friends are invited to the reception and to see the show and attend a presentation on the new experiences and buildings opening at the site in 2019. Awards for the three new prizes for artwork will be announced at the art show reception on November 4th.
Art pick-up days will be November 28th and 29th; art must be picked up by Nov. 30th.
Exhibitors must be current members in good standing of The Friends of T.C. Steele State Historic Site, Inc., hereafter referred to as the Friends. An artist who is not a member but wishes to enter may participate by joining the Friends at the time of registration. If membership for a participating artist will expire prior to November 30th, membership must be renewed with or before the application to the member show is accepted.
