Margaret “Daisy” Steele Nuebacher died at her home in Oakland, California, on November 10, 1955. She was 83 years old. She was the middle child of T.C. Steele by his first wife Mary Elizabeth “Libbie” Lakin Steele. Margaret was called “Daisy”, and born in Battle Creek, Michigan on July 7, 1872 where her father and mother had moved so the artist could complete commissioned work. The family lived in Battle Creek for two years, and returned to Indianapolis. As Daisy became older, she studied with her father. On June 1, 1905, Daisy married Gustave Neubacher, who was Selma Neubacher’s brother (Selma was T.C. Steele’s second wife). Daisy spent most of her early life in Indianapolis with her family. She accompanied her father on his 1902 west coast trip where he went to visit his mother (Harriett Newell Evans Steele) and youngest son Shirley (Ted). This trip was shortly after her mother Libbie died of tuberculous in 1899. T.C. Steele painted while he and Daisy were on this trip in both California and Oregon). Moving to California from Indianapolis, she moved to Dent in San Joaquin County, California where her brother Shirley (Ted) lived and where he passed away on October 9, 1952 at age 74. Her husband Gustave Neubacher died in the early 1920’s. Daisy had three sons, Louis and Theodore Neubacher (Berkley, California) and Robert Neubacher (Los Angeles, California), and also had six grandchildren.
