The Artist’s Helper by James Stahlhut
Best in Show: James M. Stahlhut, The Artist’s Helper, Oil
“There are obvious reasons to be attracted to this painting – its scale is ambitious, it has figures and it tells a story. I am attracted to it for additional reasons. The compositional structure of the painting is complex – the figures inhabit the foreground with a hill and trees in the middle ground and the TC Steele residence near the center top of the painting in the far distance. The painting has a nice sense of light. Are the figures perfectly painted? No, but to me they feel vividly present and get across an amusing anecdote without hitting you over the head. The painting also holds interesting incidental specifics in the form of the camp chair and the French easel.”
