Still Life with Peonies

News / Portfolio Items / Still Life with Peonies

February 7, 2020 by Friends of T.C. Steele

Theodore Clement Steele, American, 1847–1926
1915
Oil on canvas
76.2 cm x 101.6 cm | 30.0 in x 40.0 in

This dramatic still life features Peonies (center), Roses (top right), Irises (top left) and Columbines (top right). Many of the vases that appear in Steele’s still life paintings survive in the historic site collection, unfortunately this one does not.

However, the vase in the painting sits on one of the many oriental textiles collected by Selma Steele, which do still exist in the historic site collection.1
