News / Summer 2024 Newsletter / Celebrating Abigail Maxwell: Member Art Show Youth Award Winner

July 15, 2024 by Friends of T.C. Steele

In May, something special happened at Poston Road Elementary School in Martinsville. Abigail Maxwell and her art teacher Christie Brooking received accolades from the Friends of T.C. Steele 2023 Member Art Show. Abigail proudly earned an Honorable Mention award in the Youth Category, receiving a certificate. Meanwhile, her teacher, Christie, was awarded a monetary prize to support the school’s art department. Prior to this, Abigail also received a gift certificate from Hobby Lobby.

The ceremony itself was a lively affair, filled with joy and excitement. Abigail’s 6th-grade classmates clapped and cheered as she accepted her award against a vibrant backdrop of student artwork.

Among the attendees were Abigail’s mother, Amy Maxwell, who happens to be a Pre-K teacher at the school, and her grandmother, Nancy Maxwell, who was also an exhibitor in the show. Craig Barton, the event’s photographer, captured the memorable moments. Representing the Friends’ Board of Directors were Betty Wagoner and Andrea deTarnowsky, adding to the celebratory atmosphere.

This event not only honored Abigail’s talent and dedication but also highlighted the supportive community at Poston Road Elementary and the Friends of T.C. Steele organization. It was a day to remember for Abigail and everyone involved, showcasing the power of art to bring joy and recognition to young artists like Abigail Maxwell.
