Provenance Notes
This painting Afternoon in Late Autumn was in the Elisabeth Ball Collection, gift of George and Frances Ball Foundation. Elisabeth Ball was the only child of George and Frances Ball. Elisabeth Ball was educated at Vassar College and trained as a botanist. Like her parents, Elisabeth Ball also placed importance on American Art. Her namesake collection includes several important American paintings.
The Ball family were American industrialists and philanthropists, and their product most widely recognized still today are “Ball jars”, which are used for canning.
The former Indiana State Normal College, Eastern Division was named Ball State University in 1965 in recognition of the family generosity. Ball State is one of a few public colleges in the US that includes a family name.
