Clam Diggers

News / Portfolio Items / Clam Diggers

Beach landscape with clam diggers
Theodore Clement Steele, American, 1847–1926

Oil on canvas

While Steele was on the west coast during the summer of 1902, he painted Clam Diggers. This landscape painting presents a beautiful view of a family digging clams on Nye Beach, on the Oregon Coast. Tucked away in Newport, Oregon, Nye Beach is less than a mile of coastline, and runs just a few blocks inland. The beach and town, are known for their artsy character and have been a destination site for more than a century. This historic neighborhood remains popular to this day, and is viewed as one of the Oregon coast’s best getaway destinations.

There is a long history of artists in this area, many of which made their homes here, making the Newport Visual Arts Center certainly worth visiting. Referred to as “VAC” the center is operated by the Oregon Coast Council for the Arts.
